Bupleurum root is a classic herbal remedy with a long and distinguished history of use in traditional Chinese medicine.

Recent pharmacological research on Bupleurum root has highlighted its antiinflammatory activity.

Peter Holmes says: “Loaded with active saponins, acids, essential oil and phytosterols, the bitter root’s nervous sedative/relaxant effect serves to systemically reduce pain, spasm, and inflammation. Acute tense digestive conditions such as cholecystitis and colic respond especially well to it. Acute infections generally will benefit not only from [Bupleurum’s] good anti-inflammatory and antipyretic actions, but also from its anti-infective effect, which includes immediate immune stimulation à la Echinacea. Appropriately for one of today’s major chronic disease predisposing factor, toxicosis, the remedy’s famed liver-protectant action serves all types of toxicosis in general as well as hepatobiliary infections in particular.”

According to medical herbalist Alan Tillotson, a recent study suggests that bupleurum protects the liver from chemical insults, while “various clinical studies on humans have shown liver enzyme reduction in hepatitis.” Tillotson also notes that it was shown in a 1991 study that bupleurum root saponins inhibit kidney inflammation.

A NOTE ON TINCTURES

Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.

Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.

As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s about the same as what you’d find in an overly ripe banana!

Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
