Celery Seed (Apium graveolens; 250 mg/ml)
• used to treat arthritis and rheumatism
• used to treat and prevent gout

Noted for its strong antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties, celery seed has had a long and distinguished history of use in traditional Western medicine. As early as the twelfth century, for example, Hildegard of Bingen considered it the best remedy for gout, which is a form of arthritis arising from a buildup of uric acid in the blood.

James Duke relates how he has managed to keep his gout in check with celery seed: “My HMO doctor had urged me to take the gout-preventive drug allopurinol—one pill a day for the rest of my life. I did, for a while. Then I read a study showing that celery extract can eliminate uric acid. Now I’m a believer. My uric acid level has stayed below the level that triggers gout. I haven’t had any gout attacks since I began taking celery seed extract.”

David Hoffmann adds further that, “Celery seed finds its main use in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. It is especially useful in rheumatoid arthritis associated with mental depression. Its value in rheumatic conditions is related primarily to its diuretic action.”

William Mitchell has the following informative explication of the therapeutic benefits of celery seed: “[Celery seed] contains a bicyclic sesquiterpenoid called beta-selinene, which may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues of the body. [Celery seed] is an antirheumatic... Dr. Bastyr mentioned that this remedy is useful in rheumatoid arthritis... Herbalists have used [celery seed] for gout and arthritis of all kinds. When questioned, Dr. Bastyr’s said to use 20 to 60 drops of the tincture three times daily. Patients with rheumatism and arthritis should drink ample fluids.”

In establishing that celery seed has anti-nociceptive (i.e. pain-reducing) and anti-inflammatory properties, researchers have confirmed its traditional use for painful and inflammatory conditions.

A NOTE ON TINCTURES

Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.

Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.

As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s about the same as what you’d find in an overly ripe banana!

Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
