• used for cystitis
• used to prevent and treat kidney stones and urinary gravel
Traditional Western herbalists have used cornsilk for centuries as a urinary tract remedy for cystitis and for kidney stones and gravel.
Cornsilk increases blood flow to the kidneys and thus increases the rate of urine output. This mechanism underlies the actions of several similar herbs like goldenrod, birch and couch grass. By increasing the volume of urine created, these herbs effectively wash away bacteria that might otherwise remain firmly attached to the bladder walls. Corn silk may also interfere directly with the ability of bacteria to adhere to the bladder mucosa.
Corn silk is commonly used both for its ability to increase urine flow and for its demulcent properties in the treatment and prevention of kidney stones and urinary gravel.
William Mitchell calls cornsilk a “calmative to the genitourinary tract”, adding that he employs the tincture for treating catarrhal cystitis. In addition to its calmative property, Mitchell explains that this herb is also diuretic. “These seemingly contradictory indications for this plant are actually complementary. Zea is a tonic to the cardiovascular system and therefore improves the hemodynamics of the kidneys, which stimulates diuresis. This soothing diuretic can help in urinary tract irritations… I often mix Zea with marshmallow to soothe the urinary tract.”
David Hoffmann confirms that, “As a soothing diuretic, corn silk is helpful in any irritation of the urinary system. It is used for renal problems in children and as a urinary demulcent combined with other herbs in the treatment of cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis and similar conditions.”
