• used to tonify the uterus and reproductive organs
• used as a hormone balancer
False unicorn has been used for centuries for its tonifying properties upon the reproductive system.
Eclectic physicians describe the benefit that false unicorn has for reproduction: “In diseases of the reproductive organs of females, and especially of the uterus, it is one of our most valuable agents, acting as a uterine tonic, and gradually removing abnormal conditions, while at the same time it imparts tone and vigour to the reproductive organs. Hence, it is much used in leucorrhoea (vaginal discharge), amenorrhoea (absence of menstrual cycles), dysmenorrhoea (painful periods), and to remove the tendency to repeated and successive miscarriages. A particular phase removed by it is the irritability and despondency that often attends uterine troubles.”
Another Eclectic physician adds that false unicorn, “is particularly suitable as a remedy for female disorders where there is a feeble constitution, where the nervous system is weakened and where the patient becomes easily fatigued. The results of its proper selection and application are lasting. It is peculiar in its restorative influence, favouring nutrition, and promoting the secretion of healthy fluids. It is superior to some tonics in this effect.”
Naturopathic physician Eric Yarnell calls false unicorn a hormone balancer. Fellow naturopath William Mitchell confirms, “I cannot speak highly enough of this herb’s capacity to tonify and strengthen the reproductive system. In addition to its use for women, Chamaelirium is also useful for men as a genitourinary alterative and strengthener.”
Other specific indications for false unicorn: Heaviness and congestion in the pelvis with the sensation that the pelvic organs are falling out. The patient feels lumbar pain, pain down the thighs and the back of the legs, restlessness and general weakness. The patient often has a history of hemorrhoids, varicose veins of the legs and labial varicosities. (Tilgner)

A NOTE ON TINCTURES
Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.
Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.
As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s about the same as what you’d find in an overly ripe banana!
Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
