Licorice is a component of a great number of traditional Chinese formula, where it is considered the great harmonizer – a herb in other words that augments the effects of other ingredients, while also mitigating any potential toxicity. Traditional Chinese herbalist Ron Teeguarden emphasizes that licorice root "stands next to ginseng in importance in Chinese Herbalism". He adds the following descriptors from the annals of TCM herbology: "It is known as the ‘Grandfather of Chinese herbs,’ as the ‘Great Adjunct,’ and as the ‘Great Detoxifier’." Licorice "harmlessly rids the body of toxins", he explains.

The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia sums up the uses for licorice: gastric or duodenal ulcers, bronchitis, chronic gastritis, and primary adrenocortical insufficiency.

Anthony Godfrey, ND, PhD describes some of the properties of licorice root: "This herb has adaptogenic, immunomodulating, and surface immune actions. It supports and restores adrenal and pituitary function, is immunostimulating and antiallergic, and has antiviral, antibacterial, and other antiseptic properties. In addition, Asian licorice moistens, soothes, nourishes, heals, relaxes, and softens the tissues of the body, is a powerful anti-inflammatory, has antitumor properties and increases interferon levels."

The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China describes cough with much phlegm as an indication for licorice. Herbal researcher Steven Foster adds that, "its cough-suppressant effect is likened to that of codeine".

"Licorice’s antiviral and adrenocorticoid properties make it a good candidate for chronic fatigue syndrome," states James Rouse, ND, who goes on to explain that, "A general decline in adrenal function is thought to occur as a result of physiological stress as in acute or chronic illness, or even with normal physiological changes such as menopause. It also appears that certain chronic illnesses particularly asthma and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are exacerbated by insufficient adrenal hormone secretion." Foster corroborates Rouse. He relates the case of a man who cured his long-standing chronic fatigue syndrome using licorice.
