An alterativea herb that is rich in iron, yellow dock has a long history of medicinal use in cultures of both East and West.

In the early part of the last century, leading Eclectic physicians HW Felter and JU Lloyd considered yellow dock’s principal influences as alterative and tonic, asserting that, "In bad blood with skin disorders it is exceedingly efficient."

"In modern clinical practice," as herbal practitioner Simon Mills points out, "yellow dock is most used as an alterative or blood-cleansing remedy, applicable to the treatment of systemic toxic wastes of any sort where the main trouble is seen to lie in what might be termed the ‘bile-bowel’ axis. In other words, if there is a skin disease, or arthritic or other toxic degenerative condition, and there is the suggestion that liver and bowel dysfunction is implicated, then yellow dock is the remedy of choice, provided of course that its cold temperament is otherwise indicated."

In his monograph on yellow dock, well-known herbalist David Hoffmann lists the herb’s actions as "alterative, laxative, hepatic, cholagogue, and tonic" and explains that, "Yellow dock is used extensively in the treatment of chronic skin complaints, such as psoriasis. While anthraquinones usually have a strong cathartic action on the bowel, in this herb they act mildly, possibly tempered by the tannin content. Because yellow dock works in a broader manner than herbs that simply stimulate gut action, it is a valuable remedy for constipation. Yellow dock promotes the flow of bile and has the somewhat obscure action of ‘blood cleansing’. Its influence on the gallbladder gives it a role in the treatment of jaundice due to congestion."

Naturopathic physician William Mitchell notes that, "Naturopaths and herbalists use Rumex for both acute and chronic skin problems. Rumex is beneficial to the liver, through which it has a positive influence on the skin. I use Rumex tincture in combination with other remedies to treat eczema.... I like to use the dried herb... to treat anemia."

Similarly herbalist Michael Tierra affirms the use of yellow dock for chronic skin diseases and for iron deficiency in the blood, adding that, "it can be used for most inflammatory liver and gallbladder disorders."
